72nd Grand Highland Military Ball

The Grand Highland Military Ball has been held nearly every year since 1912. Each year the event honours noted guests and helps raise funds for the Calgary Highlanders, the part-time "Citizen Soldiers" of the Canadian Armed Forces Army Reserve Infantry unit.

Since 1910, the Regiment has served in Calgary, sending soldiers overseas during both World Wars, on numerous UN peacekeeping and NATO missions since the end of the Second World War, and deployed over 125 soldiers into the combat theatre during the war in Afghanistan.

GUEST OF HONOUR - TO BE ANNOUNCED

To Be Announced

It is the great honour of the Calgary Highlanders to recognize a Guest of Honour for the 72nd Grand Highland Military Ball. Check back soon for the announcement of this year's Guest of Hounour.

Last year, this honour went to Mr. Jack Whyte, who is among Canada’s best-known and most highly regarded authors and poets. Born and raised in Scotland, he was educated in England and France, before migrating to Canada in 1967. He is best known for his epic works of historical fiction covering Arthurian legend in the nine-book A Dream of Eagles series, the rise and fall of the Knights Templar in The Templar Trilogy, and some of the most dramatic moments and icons of Scottish medieval history in The Guardians of Scotland series. As of 2009, his books in Canada alone had sold over 1,000,000 copies.

For over thirty years, Mr. Whyte has served as the Regimental Bard of Calgary’s storied infantry regiment, the Calgary Highlanders. He has provided the unit with a lasting set of tributes to its soldiers over the course of their long history in the form of poems covering some of the Regiment’s most challenging engagements and most inspiring accomplishments. He has also penned lyrics for some of the Regimental Pipes and Drums’ most popular tunes, including Highland Cathedral and Black Bear.

Private event for invited guests and members.
